The Restoration Man episode shown on Wednesday 18th February 2015 at 8pm follows the restoration of a derelict Victorian school into a home and new eco renewable training centre.

As part of the restoration the owners installed various pieces of renewable equipment. Two systems featured in the restoration of the Welsh School were an Air-to-Air Heat Pump system and an Air to Water Heat Pump system.

There are two types of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP):
1. Air to Water Heat pumps – that provide central heating alongside hot water.
2. Air to Air Heat pumps that produce warm or cool air circulated by fan coils.

The AIR around us – renewable energy at it’s best, powers both systems!

What are the advantages of an air source heat pump?

  • No connection to mains gas required
  • No fuel deliveries
  • Renewable Heating for your home
  • Renewable Hot Water
  • Lower CO2 emissions
  • Lower energy bills
  • Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive possibility
  • Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive possibility

How does an ASHP work?

A heat pump system works like a refrigerator in reverse. A fridge chills the internal space by extracting the heat and expelling it via the coils at the back of the fridge. If this process is reversed a heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air.

This heat is concentrated via a cycle of evaporation and compression, and then transferred into your home’s central heating and hot water system.

For example the Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pump unit generates up to 70% of heat from the air – for FREE. The Daikin Altherma air to water heat pumps can operate in outside temperatures down to -20°C.

What does a Daikin Heat Pump system include?

  • Outdoor unit
  • Indoor unit
  • Hot water cylinder
  • Controller

The hot water is distributed around the home by either radiators and/or under floor heating pipes.

Do you qualify for RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive)?

If your renewable air source heat pump system is supplied and installed by an MCS accredited company you should be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive. The RHI is managed by the Energy Saving Trust, see website for further details: www.energysavingtrust.org.uk
