Winter Troubleshooter question.
We receive a fair few calls each winter from customers advising that their Daikin air conditioning or Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) system is blowing out cold air and is not reaching temperature.
Check the ‘Mode’ setting

The first thing to check, is that the mode is set correctly to heating? Is the heating symbol showing on the screen?

Press the ‘Mode’ button until the heating symbol is showing in the circled area of your remote control.
Multi-split system? Check that all indoor units are set to the heating mode, otherwise they will be in conflict with each other.
Is it running an Auto Defrost cycle?
Secondly, is it particularly cold outside or has the system been switched off during the winter for a length of time for example during Christmas shutdown? – Your Daikin air conditioning or ASHP system may well be going into automatic Defrost mode.
If the outside temperature is particularly low, the external coils on the Daikin condenser unit will probably be covered in a layer of frost. When you switch the indoor unit to heating mode, this will cause the external unit to blow cold air. This will amplify the freezing temperature across the external coils. The technology of your Daikin ASHP single-split or multi-split system will cause your system to automatically run a short defrost cycle. This is achieved by effectively stealing warm air from inside the building to melt the frost, called a reverse cycle defrost. During this defrost cycle you may well notice that the indoor unit blows cooler air than usual.
The most important thing is DO NOT turn the unit off thinking it has a fault and is malfunctioning. By turning the system off you will interrupt the defrost process. Switching off could lead to significant faults or could cause your system to get confused.
If you suspect your system is running a defrost cycle it is best practice to leave the system alone to complete its process and re-assess in around 20+ minutes.
If possible, it would be handy to go outside and take a look at the external condensing unit to see if there are any visible signs of frost. Sometimes steam may be seen coming from the external unit. Again, in automatic defrost mode this is normal.
